Many of the Great Old Broads for Wilderness and other folks turned out on a sunny Sunday afternoon in Durango to hear my book talk at Maria’s Book Store. Maria’s is a thriving independent shop that I was proud to be in. Community relations manager Roger Cottingham urged me to, “Come on back with your next book!”
Colorado has many co-housing communities, and in the audience was Martha McClellan, author of The Aging Athlete, who was part of a group trying to organize a senior cohousing community there in Durango. The challenge: developers were only interested in building outside of town. That doesn’t interest folks who want to be able to walk to shops and restaurants—of which there are many in Durango. Walkable communities are the wave of the future. The old way of building retirement communities on cheaper land outside of cities is far less appealing to many of us
